The Arts et monde series of shows presented by Place des Arts is back with new destinations to explore!

Montreal, October 29, 2024 – The Arts et monde series is coming back to Place des Arts show venues for autumn 2024 and winter 2025! Starting in November, and until March 2025, the series is offering four vibrant stage experiences, inspired by international cultures and artists.

The different shows take us on a voyage around the world by visiting Argentina through the dancing of Social Tango Project, discovering the sounds of the world with the gospel music of The Kingdom Choir, and sweeping us away to the rhythms of Kodo’s traditional Japanese drums in the show Warabe and with the South African percussion instruments of the American troupe Step Afrika!.

“This year once again, our Arts et monde series is offering shows that explore a variety of artistic horizons from the four corners of the globe. An invitation to discover the richness offered by tango, gospel singing, taiko and African dance.”
- Clothilde Cardinal, Director of Programming, Place des Arts

A journey through culture and music that Montrealers won’t soon forget!

First destination: Argentina (Tango)

Social Tango Project
November 13, 2024, Théâtre Maisonneuve

Choreographer Agustina Videla of this Buenos Aires dance company returns to Montreal to share her deep love for tango. Melding several artistic disciplines, the show brings together ten dancers, four musicians and a female singer, who combine to showcase a number
of lesser known styles of this popular Latin dance, taking as a narrative thread the love story of a woman and a male tango dancer. Sensitivity and precision are what the artists will bring to their re-creation of classic tango melodies and a sound imbued with Latin culture. A series of photographs and a documentary film will add the finishing touches to the discovery of a fascinating folkdance that has captivated audiences around the world.

After the performance, spectators are invited to join the dancers on stage and be part of a guided milonga
in a spirit of togetherness!

Second destination: United Kingdom (Gospel)

The Kingdom Choir
November 28, 2024, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier

Headed by award-winning conductor Karen Gibson, renowned London-based chorus The Kingdom Choir will be treading the boards of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier once again. Over the last three decades, their voices
have thrilled audiences on stages across the planet alongside the likes of Elton John, Barbra Streisand and the Spice Girls, not to mention their mythic appearance at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The same infectious energy and enthusiasm they’re so well-known for will go into the presentation of a brand new show blending traditional gospel and contemporary music. From Aretha Franklin to Stevie Wonder by way of Beyoncé and Lauryn Hill, their takes on world-renowned artists are quite simply sensational!

Third destination: United States (Percussive Dance)

Step Afrika!
February 25, 2025, Théâtre Maisonneuve

For the very first time, the famous dance troupe Step Afrika! will be touching down at Place des Arts to showcase its mythical step dancing. Renowned the world over for its percussive dance and its blend of
African sounds, the company has performed in no fewer than 60 countries since its founding in 1994. The 18 artists will use the stage as a means of expression, merging songs, stories and humor with rhythmic dance. Their unifying energy will have the audience leaving their seats and dancing to the percussion-driven rythms!

Fourth destination: Japan (Percussion)

Kodo – Warabe
March 13, 2025, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier

After their acclaimed show Tsuzumi, the collective Kodo – which can be translated as “heartbeat” – returns to Montreal with the eagerly anticipated Warabe.

The new work looks to a classical music repertoire inspired by Japanese tales: the opening number, for example, is a nod to an art form called Shishi, or deer dance, in the purest Japanese tradition. A simple mix
of the multiple sounds, expressions, and vibrations of taiko drums, one that evokes a wide range of emotions in audiences. Unique sounds that will resound in each and every spectator.
