Creating opportunities to put young Montrealers in touch with the performing arts. This is the philosophy behind Place des Arts’ School Program, which has been offered in the city’s schools for close to 10 years now. The program gives students, working with their teachers, a chance to take part in true creative experiences alongside enthusiastic artist-mediators.

Each of the program’s projects includes:

• A workshop
held in class*, led by artist-mediators.
• A show at Place des Arts, relating to a specific artistic discipline: Pub Royal (musical), Richardson Zéphir (comedy), Kanen (writing and music), David Goudreault (slam), and Waahli (hip-hop).

* With the exception of schools outside Greater Montreal.

Complementary options:

•
For students: additional in-class cultural mediation workshops.
• For teachers: specialized training in aesthetic education at Place des Arts, free of charge.

Educational Approach

Aesthetic education and cultural mediation are at the heart of Place des Arts’ school program. Its main goal is to foster academic success by guiding young people as they develop their sense of engagement, critical thinking, and personal empowerment. At the end of this process, students are better able to understand the creative process artists undertake before taking to the stage.

To achieve this goal, the program encourages teacher participation. In preparing for the workshops, teachers have access to a complete toolkit, including a study guide and video links to further explore the artistic discipline. The activities suggested in the toolkit are designed to be easily incorporated into the teaching of several subjects on the school curriculum. Place des Arts’ education program also offers training for teachers of the participating groups to familiarize them with aesthetic education and cultural mediation approaches, along with meetings with the artist-mediators prior to the start of the projects.

Targeted school subjects: French | French as a second language | English | English as a second language | The Contemporary World | Geography, History, and Citizenship Education | Culture and Quebec Citizenship | Arts | Science and Technology
