The Kingdom Choir: Talent fit for a prince
The contagious energy and joyful musicality of this London choir took the world by storm when they performed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Since then, their popular acclaim has only grown. Portrait of a vocal ensemble with warm energy and irresistible talent.
From Aretha Franklin to the Spice Girls
For more than 20 years, the Kingdom Choir has been led by its founder Karen Gibson, dubbed “Britain’s godmother of gospel” by UK journal The Guardian. Nearly two dozen members from the London area come together to sing from a repertoire filled with hope, faith and resilience, with songs ranging from Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and more.
The choir has backed Elton John and performed with the Spice Girls. They’ve sung for Bill Clinton and to honour Queen Elizabeth II, at her Golden Jubilee, but the world truly took note of The Kingdom Choir when they performed at the wedding ceremony for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
A performance that changed everything
On May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the gospel choir sang a particularly touching, masterful rendition of Ben E. King’s song Stand by Me for Prince Harry, his bride Meghan Markle, and their guests.
Close to 1.9 billion viewers around the world tuned in to watch this wedding, and interest in the choir skyrocketed exponentially as soon as the performance was finished.
A debut album released last fall
Just a short time after that life-changing opportunity, Sony asked The Kingdom Choir to record their first album.
The album was released in October 2018 and features the title track “Stand by Me,” the song that brought the group to the world stage. The album’s 15 tracks pay homage to their spiritual roots with gospel standards such as “Amazing Grace” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” while looking to the future with inspiring covers of contemporary pop hits, including “Fix You” by Coldplay and “Halo” by Beyoncé.
The choir has also included one original work, written by members. The song “Chases” is a powerful ballad that signals a new era for the group. The Kingdom Choir features several composers in their ranks, and will continue to create new material and share their songs and infectious spirit throughout the world.
The gospel choir will be celebrating life, love and hope on November 7, 2019, at the Maison Symphonique at Place des Arts.
