"My best work, my greatest work." This is how Ludwig van Beethoven described his Missa Solemnis, a complex piece and one that is unique in its expression of metaphysical fervour. This masterpiece of the sacred repertoire, rarely produced because of its formidable technical requirements, represents a challenge for its performers.
Two hundred and fifty years after the composer's birth, 85 choristers of the Chœur classique de Montréal, soloists and orchestra, gathered under the skilful and experienced direction of conductor Louis Lavigueur, present to us for just one evening this imposing Missa Solemnis, composed by Beethoven "to arouse and instill permanent religious feeling in both singers and audience."
