This colourful concert opens with the eerie sounds of Ligeti’s Atmosphères, followed by the rollicking adventures of the magic broom in Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Liszt’s Totentanz, or Dance of the Dead. The action does not letup with Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin–a pantomime set in a house of ill repute.
