Opening Concert of the 2017 Montreal Bach Festival
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Mass in B minor, BWV 232
Collegium 1704, Vocal and instrumental ensemble, Prague
The Collegium 1704, a vocal and instrumental ensemble from Prague, owes its name to a milestone in the biography of Jan Dismas Zelenka, a composer at the Dresden court and an esteemed acquaintance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s. Even if they feel at home in the entire Baroque repertoire, these seasoned musicians are particularly close to Bach’s great vocal works. Which work would thus be more fitting for their Montreal debut than the great Mass in B minor, summa of all of Bach’s sacred music.
