Sparkling white landscapes, cheeks reddened by the cold, eyes filled with wonder and the smell of gingerbread men are all part of winter tales, as is this concert performed by Christoph Campestrini on the podium and Serhiy Salov at the piano. The suite from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty opens the ball with delightful dances we have associated with the story since we were tots. The tone is set for Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, used as the soundtrack for Andersen’s “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” in Fantasia 2000. Dances by Strauss father and son lead gaily into the adventures of Hansel and Gretel composed by Humperdinck.
