From Tuesday, August 24 to Friday, August 27, the Play series’ eight double programs carve out space for experimentation inside Place des Arts’ Cinquième Salle. Play highlights the exploratory, visceral and immersive character of contemporary artists in digital art, audiovisual creation, and electronic music.
Charbonneau/Amato are formed of a modular synth, a Farfisa, drum machines and mono synths. In their synthetic dialogues and rich electronic sketches, Charbonneau/Amato invoke spacious soundscapes and complex textures with ambient contours, bathed in elegant harmonic layers and wavering rhythms. The pair are world premiering a new live show with material from their first and upcoming effort. The concert is accompanied by live screenings by Montréal artist and filmmaker Joël Vaudreuil, also a member of Avec Pas d'Casque.
For MUTEK, amiskwaciy (Edmonton) -based musician, composer, and sound designer, Matthew Cardinal recreates his debut album Asterisms live, accompanied by projections created for the project by media artist Stephanie Kuse. Asterisms contemplates emotional textures with constellations of synthesizers dancing around atmospheric themes and rhythmic accents. The visual component features softly distorted natural textures, hypnotic motion and vibrant synthetic colours. The pairing of Cardinal’s meditative audio journal entries with Kuse’s sparkling visuals results in an enveloping and otherworldly A/V experience.
