On July 6th, friends and colleagues of one of Canada’s most decorated figures in music, Dr. Oliver Jones, will come together during the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal at Théâtre Jean Duceppe to honour Dr. Jones through music ahead of the occasion of his 90th birthday. Featuring performances from Taurey Butler, Rafael Zaldivar, Lorraine Desmarais, Chet Doxas, Lex French, Éric Lagacé, Jim Doxas and vocalist Ranee Lee, Oliver Jones at 90 will celebrate the music and career of one of Montréal’s most beloved sons, who has had an immeasurable impact not just on generations of musicians, but on his local Montréal community.
Audiences will also be treated to a performance from the 2024 Prix Oliver Jones recipient. Established in 2019 for the 40th edition of FIJM, the Prix Oliver Jones was created to honour and recognize young university-level musicians who consider themselves of a visible minority. Supporting, nurturing and providing young musicians in the early stages of their career with opportunities for growth and to learn has been of the utmost importance to Dr. Jones. The Prix Oliver Jones is an extension of this part of his legacy, and we look forward to introducing you to this year’s recipient.
