For the first time, Les 7 Doigts are joining forces with other creators for the artistic direction of a show. Choreographers Marie Chouinard, Victor Quijada and Marcos Morau were invited by Samuel Tétreault, co-founder and co-artistic director of Les 7 Doigts, to take part in creating one of these three pieces. Here, you can watch a meeting between a dancer and a hand-balancer, be entranced by a quintet of hand-balancers, and then dive into a third, more theatrical, act in which circus takes centre stage.
#1: Anne & Samuel
In this piece, Marie Chouinard develops the ambiguous relationship between two beings, a dancer and a hand-balancer, who depend on one another emotionally and physically. Their playground is an immaculate square white floor. Dance is central to this first world, where Ms. Chouinard pursues her research work around medical crutches, which she began with the piece bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, created earlier with her company.
#2: Variations 9.81
Victor Quijada gives an original dialogue featuring the acrobatic virtuosity of five hand-balancers and the choreographic complexity particular to the movement technique he developed in his work with his own company. The set is a surface pierced by 75 anchor points which can hold up to 21 hand-balancing canes of different lengths. These canes, which the artists handle and position in various configurations, make it possible to compose and recompose the scenographic space throughout the piece.
More theatrical, but also more acrobatic, than the first two pieces, this last part of the show, choreographed by Marcos Morau, is made up of solos, duos and group tableaux that give a nod to the various circus disciplines: unicycling, juggling, aerial straps, corde lisse, hand-to-hand...Through their appearances and their encounters, the eight artists seek to free themselves from the constraints they explored in the preceding pieces.
