Audiences are invited to a veritable event with a show in the form of a lecture fleuve, an extended stream of reading, La traversée du siècle (Crossing the Century), a colossal project to celebrate one of our greatest authors, Michel Tremblay. For the first time ever, seven Montréal theatres — the Centre du Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui, Duceppe, Théâtre Espace Libre, Théâtre La Licorne, Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, Théâtre de Quat’Sous and Théâtre du Rideau Vert — are teaming up to pay homage to Michel Tremblay’s world of theatre and fiction.
La traversée du siècle, a show created in collaboration with André Brassard, adapted and directed by Alice Ronfard, immerses the audience in the lives and fates of Victoire, Albertine, and Thérèse, three of the most recognizable characters from Tremblay’s work. These three strong, resilient women travel through the century and the upheavals in Québec society. Michel Tremblay has created a moving panorama addressing avant-garde themes that emerge during the 21st century: the mixing of cultures, the transcendence of gender, homosexuality, the role of women, the desire for emancipation, and the marks years of oppression leave on a people’s soul. From the fantastic to hyperrealism, from allegory to tragedy, from gravity to comedy, this inventory of a century is a patchwork adaptation of some of his most celebrated novels and plays, including Chroniques du Plateau-Mont-Royal, La Diaspora des Desrosiers, Victoire!, Le passé antérieur, En pièces détachées (In Parts), Albertine en cinq temps (Albertine in Five Times), Sainte Carmen de la Main (Sainte-Carmen of the Main) and Le peintre d’aquarelles.
A massive, unifying theatrical project, reflecting the man who, for the past 60 years, has defined the contours of a Québec mythology marked by battles and resilience, fuelled by love and difference.
