Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the Blake Pouliot and Yannick Nézet-Séguin concert scheduled on February 21, 2021, has been cancelled. Ticket holders will be reimbursed directly.

Ending on a soft, ambiguous note, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 begs the question – what’s left after war? Terrifying and tortured, this symphony leaves bravado and victory aside. Under the enlightened direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Orchestre’s performance of this piece paints a portrait of the suffering and absurdity of armed conflict.

No one makes the violin sing like Barber. Our soloist in residence, Blake Pouliot, will perform one of the most beautiful concertos of the violin repertoire, composed at the beginning of the Second World War. With its soaring melodies, poignant oboe solo and whirlwind finale, Barber’s Violin Concerto starts off the program on an optimistic note before leading into Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8.

Barber, Concerto pour violon
Chostakovitch, Symphonie n° 8
