Newly smitten with the symphonic genre, Brahms composed his Symphony no. 2 in less than a year. Irresistibly seductive from the opening bars, the work revealed a more classical side of the composer, and its success eclipsed that of the First Symphony. Influenced by Brahms, R. Strauss composed Burlesque for piano and orchestra, which is characterized by both humor and whimsy.

R. Strauss, Burleske, TrV 145
