At 25, singer, songwriter and artist Mustafa won his first JUNO award at the 2022 JUNO Awards in the Best Alternative Album of the Year category for his debut project When Smoke Rises. The Toronto-born artist has mentioned that this stunning record is heavily influenced by his upbringing as he was growing up in the Regent Park area. In this eight-track debut album, Mustafa manages to transcend several genres while remaining true to himself as he navigates topics such as pain, grief, and loss.
