The Musée d’art contemporain presents the 13th Max and Iris Stern International Symposium, Indigenous Women, Embodiment and Sovereignty, organized by Wanda Nanibush, Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and Caroline Nepton-Hotte, Associate professor of art history at Université du Québec à Montréal.
Indigenous women have been at the forefront of making change for Indigenous communities. For years they have fought for official inquiries into the causes of the violence they suffer in Canada and Québec, and recommendations on how to address it. Recent reports have given them an opportunity to (re)affirm their presence in the public and sociopolitical sphere at a time when their visions of the world and their imaginaries are also being expressed with increasing intensity in the art world. This symposium combines performative lectures and academic reflections that consider these reports, and also provides an opportunity to hear from several leading Indigenous women on issues that matter to them. It is presented as part of the programming for Rebecca Belmore: Facing the Monumental exhibition (June 20 – October 6, 2019), an exhibition curated by Wanda Nanibush and originally presented at the AGO, and will include a presentation by the artist.
