As the world’s compass reverberates in panic, along come the singers and musicians of El Djenadia, like knights of the resistance. Working to sustain Andalusian art, they brandish their priceless age-old heritage with honour. In this Montréal première, a group of 11 talented young artists, heralds of today and tomorrow, will turn the Cinquième Salle into a music-lover’s time machine.
One need only hear the first notes from these remarkable singers (all women) and musicians to grasp the superb ambition of this group from the city of Boufarik. With a musical heritage handed down orally for centuries from generation to generation, these guardians of fine music offer a captivating portrait of an era in which the importance of feeling and precision reigns over and above any quarrel.
Three young soloists with beautiful voices, Boumdal Insaf Sabrine, Makhlouf Yousra Mana and Mériem Si Ahmed, take the place of men in performing treasures of Algerian classical music. Backed by their orchestra, they will showcase nubah, a musical cycle in which musicians await their turn as they dazzle the Cinquième Salle audience.
