Opéra de Montréal

A key component of the Opéra’s mission is to democratize the operatic art form. At the crossroads of Europe and America, the Opéra de Montréal is enriched by the aesthetics of both continents, while staying true to its desire to remain accessible. “Opera is for everyone!”

Each year, some 55,000 spectators make their way through the doors at the Opéra de Montréal, the largest francophone opera company in North America.

Founded in 1980 on the initiative of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Quebec, the Opéra has become a key player in Montreal’s economic, cultural, and social development. It maintains working relationships with over 360 local businesses, and hires over 800 artists and craftspeople.

Its season is made up of four to five operas, a concert by the Atelier lyrique, a Gala, and several outreach activities. Its rich and varied programming reflects its underlying motivation to put opera into everyone’s reach. Legend, drama, comedy… classical approach or reinterpretation… romantic or contemporary repertoire: something for everyone!
